Cosmetic ingredients in your skincare: smart combining or better solo

In the world of skincare products, cosmetic ingredients are carefully weighed. Research is done to see which combinations reinforce each other and which ingredients are better used individually. Both in dermatological practice and at Iconic Elements, we understand the importance of the right ingredients to optimally hydrate, correct and protect the skin. Therefore, we take this aspect seriously when developing our skincare products.

Below are some examples of cosmetic ingredients that work well together. Fundamentally, there is synergy, where the ingredients work together to achieve a joint effect. In addition, there is complementarity, where the ingredients complement each other despite each having their own function. Finally, the stability of certain ingredients can improve when they are used together.

Cosmetische Ingredienten, Cosmetic Ingredients

Why it works: Hyaluronic acid is known for its ability to retain moisture deep within the skin, keeping the skin hydrated and supple. On the other hand, Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals, stimulates collagen production, and brightens the skin. Combined, they work well together and complement each other, not only providing hydration but also promoting the overall health and radiance of the skin.

Why it works: Niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, is known for its calming properties and ability to reduce redness. On the other hand, retinol is a form of vitamin A that renews the skin and promotes cell renewal. Together they form a powerful combination that not only fights acne, but also minimizes fine lines and signs of aging, making the skin look radiant and youthful.

Why it works: This soothing combination is like a gentle hug for sensitive skin. Aloe Vera is known for its calming and hydrating properties, while chamomile offers anti-inflammatory and soothing benefits. Together they reduce irritation, soften the skin and diminish redness, creating an ideal environment for sensitive skin to recover.

Why it works: Salicylic acid is an exfoliating acid that penetrates deep into the pores to cleanse them and combat acne. Tea tree oil is known for its antimicrobial properties and can effectively fight bacteria on the skin. Together, they form a good combination that tackles acne by addressing both the cause and the symptoms, keeping the skin clear and healthy.

Why it works: Bakuchiol is a plant-based retinoid alternative that helps stimulate collagen production, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and improve skin elasticity. On the other hand, there’s niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3, which is known for its soothing properties and ability to improve skin texture, reduce redness, and regulate sebum production. Bakuchiol and niacinamide complement each other at various levels. While bakuchiol focuses on rejuvenation and reducing signs of aging, niacinamide offers a soothing and balancing effect. Together, they create a synergistic effect, enhancing the benefits of each ingredient.

Why it works: Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from harmful free radicals, while argan oil is rich in nutrients that deeply nourish and repair the skin. Combined, they offer intense hydration and protection, nourishing the skin and giving it a healthy glow.

Why the work: There is synergy between both ingredients: When niacinamide and hyaluronic acid are used together, they create a powerful synergy that enhances each other’s effectiveness. While niacinamide hydrates, soothes and evens out the skin, hyaluronic acid provides intense hydration and helps retain moisture. An additional benefit is that niacinamide and hyaluronic acid can safely be used together without irritating the skin or causing side effects. This makes them suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

Why it works: Ceramides are natural fats that naturally occur in the skin and can hydrate and protect the skin. Peptides are small protein molecules that can help repair the skin. Both ingredients can be used safely together and enhance each other in effectiveness.

Why it works: Vitamin C and Vitamin E combine their powers and offer comprehensive support to the skin. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, acts as a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from free radicals, stimulates collagen production, and ensures a clear complexion. Additionally, it is known for its ability to reduce hyperpigmentation and repair sun-caused damage.

The collaboration of vitamin C and E manifests in combating signs of aging, reducing inflammation, and promoting a healthy, radiant complexion. What actually happens is that vitamin C donates an electron to vitamin E, thereby regenerating and supplementing both vitamins. This not only results in skin that is protected from damage, but also in maintaining a youthful appearance.

Cosmetic ingredients that should not be combined with each other are mainly active ingredients that can enhance each other, causing your skin to experience more burning, redness, and irritation. As a result, dark spots can occur, also known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, if this reaction is not recognized and stopped in time.

Cosmetische Ingredienten

Why separately: Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that brightens and protects the skin from free radicals. On the other hand, benzoyl peroxide is known for its acne-fighting properties. Together, they can reduce each other’s effectiveness because benzoyl peroxide can compromise the stability of vitamin C, making it less effective. Preferably use these ingredients at different times to maximize their individual benefits.

Why separate: Retinol is a potent form of Vitamin A that promotes cell renewal and helps reduce fine lines. AHA (alpha-hydroxy acids) and BHA (beta-hydroxy acids) are exfoliating acids that remove the top layer of dead skin cells. Together, they can cause too much exfoliation, leading to excessive irritation and sensitivity. It’s better to use retinol and AHA/BHA acids on different days of your skincare routine to minimize irritation.

Why separate: Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid that cleanses the pores and fights acne, while vitamin C brightens the skin and protects against oxidative stress. Combining these two can disrupt the pH level of vitamin C, making it less stable and less effective. It is better to use them at different times to maximize their individual benefits.

Why separately: Both ingredients are often used in the treatment of acne, but the simultaneous use of vitamin A acid and benzoyl peroxide can lead to excessive irritation and dryness. Vitamin A acid (tretinoin) increases the sensitivity of the skin, and combining it with benzoyl peroxide can enhance this reaction. It is advisable to use these powerful ingredients at different times to minimize unwanted side effects.

Why separate: Both are exfoliating acids that improve skin texture, but salicylic acid works on oily pores, while AHA, such as glycolic acid, targets the exfoliation of the upper skin layers. Using salicylic acid and AHA simultaneously can be too intense and can lead to excessive dryness and irritation. Preferably use these acids on different days to approach exfoliation in a balanced way.

If you want to combine two or more cosmetic ingredients/products, here are a few tips:

Start by using one product at a time and gradually increase the frequency of use. This gives your skin the time to get used to the new product.

Pay attention to any irritations, such as redness, itching, or swelling. If you experience these symptoms, stop using the product and consult a dermatologist.

Please note that the effects of cosmetic ingredients can vary from person to person. What works well for one person may not work well for another.

The secret behind the right combinations lies in understanding how ingredients work together. Some enhance each other, while others reduce each other’s effectiveness. It’s like putting together a winning team!
