Outside the sunny season, you may not think about UV rays, but they are present all year round. Discover why UVA protection in the winter is crucial and how Iconic Elements’ Daycream with natural UVA filter uniquely cares for the Dutch winter skin.
Why a UVA filter in winter?
Traditional sun protection products often contain SPF (Sun Protection Factor), aimed at blocking UVB rays, which are mainly responsible for sunburn. In the Netherlands, UVB rays start to gain strength from March. UVA rays penetrate deeply, cause premature aging and are present in the winter sun. Protection is essential throughout the year.
SPF products can hinder the natural production of vitamin D in the skin, as vitamin D is produced when the skin is exposed to UVB rays.
The Magical Ingredient: Porphyria Umbilicalis Natural UVA Filter
Our Day Cream uses only a UVA filter derived from Porphyria Umbilicalis. This means that it is aimed at protection against UVA rays, which are present throughout the year and penetrate deeper into the skin, which can lead to premature aging.
There are two types of UV rays that affect our skin: UVB and UVA. UVB rays are quite powerful and hit the epidermis. They can cause direct DNA damage to the epidermis. UVA rays penetrate deeper, into the dermis, where they create free radicals and damage collagen and elastin, affecting skin structure, read wrinkles and fine lines. If UVB is compared to a “superficial attack”, then UVA is more like a “deep invasion”, affecting various elements of the skin.
UVA protection with Porphyria Umbilicalis benefits for your skin
- Preserves the youthful appearance
- Limits damage from free radicals
- UVA-filter is photostable, which means that it retains its strength and remains effective even when exposed to sunlight, continuously protecting the skin against UVA radiation.
Unique to Iconic Elements
At Iconic Elements, we are proud of the scientific foundation of our Day Cream, with the Porphyria Umbilicalis UVA filter. This ingredient, recently presented at the dermatological EADV congress in Berlin, has had our attention since 2016, and here’s why:
Porphria Umbilicalis – A Promising UVA Filter:
Recent presentations at the EADV congress emphasized the promising properties of Porphria Umbilicalis as an effective UVA filter.
Porphria Umbilicalis, the source of our powerful UVA filter, plays a crucial role in the world of skincare. This ingredient belongs to the family of Mycosporine-like Amino Acids (MAAs), which makes it extra special.
Mycosporine-like Amino Acids (MAAs): MAAs are natural substances present in various organisms, including algae. They act as natural sun filters and provide protection against harmful UV rays.
The connection with Porphria Umbilicalis: Also known as the red algae from which our UVA filter is extracted, contains the most MAAs. This specific class of natural sun filters is known for their ability to absorb UV radiation and protect the skin.
This alginate and its ability to filter UVA rays makes it a highly praised ingredient in the world of dermatology.

What makes Iconic Elements unique is our early recognition of the potential of Porphria Umbilicalis. Since 2016, we have included this ingredient in our Daycream, long before it took the spotlight at international conferences.
UVA protection for all skin tones: A necessity from light to dark
It is a common understanding that darker skins are naturally better protected against harmful UVB rays. However, a recent expert panel publication reveals that, regardless of skin color, all skin types need UVA protection. While the strength of the sun can vary, it remains important to arm our skin against these deeper penetrating UVA rays that contribute to premature aging and other skin damage. Regardless of whether you have light or dark skin, integrating UVA protection into your daily routine is the key to healthy and radiant skin all year round.
